Back to run as a face-to-face meeting, the XV Foresight Training Course “Boosting research and innovation in a changing regulatory framework”, organised by Fondazione Gianni Benzi in close cooperation with Università degli Studi di Bari Aldo Moro. The course was held on 15-16 December 2022 in Bari and online.
Relevant advances have been implemented over the last few years; emerging gene therapies for rare inherited diseases and personalised therapies in oncology have been developed and have entered the clinical practice. Also the challenges raised during the pandemic, have accelerated and led to a mobilisation of the entire scientific community and regulators, toward the needed transformation of the research setting.
The application of new computational technologies and Artificial Intelligence as well as the implementation of faster regulatory procedures are to be considered at European level to face the challenges of the future.
These were the key points discussed during the course.
Fedele Bonifazi, president of Fondazione Gianni Benzi, together with Professor Cosimo Damiano Altomare from the Department of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Science at the University of Bari introduced the course.
The chair of the Committee on Orphan Medicinal Products at the European Medicines Agency gave an insight on the current regulatory framework in the field of drug development, particularly referring to medicines for rare diseases.
Outstanding speakers from research centres and research infrastructures working at the European and national level, provided their point of view.
Moreover, researchers at Fondazione Gianni Benzi, Viviana Giannuzzi, Lucia Ruggieri and Annalisa Landi, focused on the paediatric and rare diseases research. The application of innovative research methodologies for paediatric orphan medicines was also presented.
Companies, such as Amgen Inc. and Valuevector, as well as a patients’ representative from the European Rare Diseases Organization (EURORDIS), actively contributed to the discussion.
