On 18 January, the World Health Organization (WHO) has released a new guidance document aimed at governing the ethical utilisation of Large Multi-modal Models (LMMs) in healthcare. Unlike conventional AI models, LMMs can process various forms of data inputs and generate novel contents spanning text, images, or video independently by the original data type.
These models hold huge promise for applications across healthcare, scientific research, public health, and drug development. However, their implementation comes with inherent risks that necessitate careful consideration.
Based on guidance published in 2021, the new document issued by the WHO outlines over 40 recommendations for consideration by governments, technology companies and healthcare providers.
