Fondazione Gianni Benzi is pleased to announce the publication of a new article in the journal Hemato. The article, titled Design and Implementation of a Sickle Cell Disease Electronic Registry in Resource Limited Setting in Nigeria—A Pilot Study was co-authored by our researchers M. Aminu Idris (temporarily hosted for a staff exchange), Lucia Ruggieri and Fedele (Duccio) Bonifazi.
The article describes the design and implementation of an electronic registry for SCD in Nigeria, developed under the African Research and Innovative Initiative for Sickle Cell Education (ARISE), a project funded by the EU (Grant Agr. No. 824021).
This registry represents a valuable approach to data collection that can be used also in resource-limited settings. Specifically, it was designed to collect data from SCD patients in the Ahmadu Bello University Teaching Hospital, Zaria (Nigeria), with the aim of improving care and treatment of the disease and facilitating research. It includes information on demographics, medical history and treatment from more than 2,600 patients.
The authors of the paper believe that an electronic register is a valuable tool for improving health outcomes for persons living with SCD.
