Today 28th February is the Rare Diseasy Day! Worldwide there are 300 million people living with a rare disease. Rare tumours are 20% of solid tumours. Their needs do not and cannot be ignored!

For this occasion, Fondazione Gianni Benzi Onlus, in collaboration with Associazione Bottega del Sorriso and IRCCS Istituto Tumori "Giovanni Paolo II” Bari, organised the meeting “I tumori rari: sfide ed opportunità”, held on 23 February 2023 at the meeting room of Istituto Tumori Bari.

The meeting, focused on patients with rare tumours, including paediatric patients, underlined the need to establish a network for patients and their needs by applying a multispecialistic approach for a more effective and prompt diagnosis and treatment. Organising the healthcare assistance according to this model might ensure the access to treatment in Apulia region to patients, reducing the so-called health tourism.

The effort and the point of view of doctors, researchers, representatives from patients’ associations and companies involved in the fight against tumours have been the focal point of the productive and intensive discussion, that should result in concrete actions supporting patients with rare tumours and scientific research in the rare disease field.
