I tumori rari: sfide ed opportunità
Rare tumours are a heterogeneous group of more than 200 types of tumours and, taken together, represent about 20% of all solid tumours. Rare tumours are often associated with non-oncological rare diseases as they are both characterised by genetic alterations.
However, rare cancers have a worse prognosis than more frequent tumours due to a later diagnosis, lack of therapeutic options and fragmented treatments. Because of their complexity, the treatment of rare cancers requires specific expertise in reference centres, able to guarantee timely and high-profile multidisciplinary clinical management, as well as a collaboration in national and international networks. We will also discuss about paediatric cancers that, as is known, are rare cancers. Moreover, children should be given more attention and protection.
Patients with rare tumour and their families do not always find adequate answers to their health needs in our Region. Therefore, they are forced to migrate to other Italian Regions.
Within the Rare Disease Day initiatives, Associazione Bottega del Sorriso, IRCCS Istituto Tumori “Giovanni Paolo II” Bari and Fondazione per la Ricerca Farmacologica Gianni Benzi are promoting the conference ” I tumori rari: sfide ed opportunità” to be held on 23 February 2023 at the conference room at IRCCS Istituto Tumori “Giovanni Paolo II” in Bari.
It will be the occasion to encounter and discuss with all the stakeholders involved in tumours and rare diseases: physicians and researchers, patients and their families, institutions, companies. The aim is to highlight the value of cooperation, to improve the organisation of healthcare and to boost research.
